Government Begins Wage Negotiations with Teachers - Discussions with Police Federation Scheduled for Later This Month

The Government of Jamaica has begun wage negotiations with the island’s teachers.

State Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Public Service, Honourable Rudyard Spencer,  today, met with members of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA), the negotiating body for the over 20, 000 registered teachers at the Ministry’s Heroes Circle Offices.

The meeting forms part of the discussions toward ironing out the wage and benefits package for the 2017/2019 contract period.

Speaking to the timeline of the negotiations and the government’s position, Minister Spencer said the GOJ wishes to have the discussions wrapped up as soon as possible.

He highlighted the importance of the nation’s teachers as a pillar of socialization and academic training and urged the teachers to work with the government toward a mutually satisfactory position on the areas to be addressed.

“Despite the need to come to the bargaining table for each contract period, we need to move forward on one accord because at the end of the day, we are seeking the same objectives,” Minister Spencer said.
